“Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs only to the people who prepare for it today.” — Malcolm X (Minister, human rights activist and civil rights leader, 1925–1965)

There was a time when the sound of tornado sirens ringing out in the community, or driving past roadside flood gauges felt strange. Maybe you can remember cruising in a woodgrain station wagon without a seatbelt long before airbags were invented. Or, can you think of the first time you ever saw a measuring line on the interior side of a gas station door frame? It’s so very subtle, but the ability to use the tools and devices from our surroundings to take care of ourselves, and make adjustments with urgency, gives us a huge advantage when taking care of our personal well being.

The following examples will have the perspective of being on a school campus. However, this is not about shopping for school supplies, sneakers or dorm room accessories. This is about the benefit of knowing why and how an emergency-while-in-the-community plan, can benefit your household and the people within.
